California
1998-99 record
22-11 overall, 8-10 Pac-10 (won NIT championship)
Coach
Ben Braun, 57-35 (3 years at California); 390-270 overall
Projected starting lineup
G Donte Smith, 6-2, Fr.
Washington D.C. prep player of the year, averaging 28.3 points and 6.2 assists at Anacostia High.

G Brian Wethers, 6-5, Fr.
Cal's highest-ranked recruit can knock 'em down from long range.

C Shahar Gordon, 6-10, Fr.
Played for Israeli junior national team; gives Bears a passing presence inside.

F Sean Lampley, 6-7, Sr.
Only returning starter, averaged 12.4 points last year; most talented Bear.

F Nick Vander Laan, 6-10, Fr.
Overcoming mononucleosis, he's considered one of Cal's toughest players by Braun.

Top guy off the bench
Raymond "Circus" King, 5-10, Sr.
Backup point guard is flamboyant player who takes care of the ball.
Key Newcomer
Joe Shipp, 6-5, Los Angeles.
Braun likes this new player, who can drive and score from perimeter.
Key Games
vs. Gonzaga (Dec. 21). First round of Pete Newell Challenge finds the Bears against last year's NCAA darling. Stanford or Mississippi State awaits Cal the next day.
Outlook
Everything's new, from the roster to the homecourt, Haas Pavilion replacing Harmon Gym. Braun loves the Haas atmosphere, but with so many freshmen and unproven players, a return to the NIT isn't likely.
Golden Bears' 1999-00 schedule
