F LaVell Blanchard, 6-7, Fr. Gatorade National Player of the Year averaged 28 ppg and 12 rpg as Ann Arbor (Mich.). Pioneer HS senior. F Josh Asselin, 6-11, Jr. His improvement was a pleasant surprise last season. C Peter Vignier, 6-11, Sr. Averaged 7.4 rpg overall, but dropped off in Big Ten season (6.0 rpg). G Jamal Crawford, 6-6, Fr. Was two-time Mr. Basketball winner in Washington. G Kevin Gaines, 6-4, Fr. Was Nevada Player of the Year.

Top guys off the bench

F Leon Jones, 6-5, So., Averaged 4.3 ppg in 19 minutes per game last season, but shot just 28.7 percent. F Brandon Smith, 6-7, Jr. Who averaged 8.3 ppg last season, would have been the top reserve but he will likely be out until mid-January with a torn ligament in his knee.

Outlook

Wolverines' five-man recruiting class was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation. It's not quite the Fab Five, but it's easily the school's best class since Webber, Rose, Howard, et al. The Wolverines likely will need a season to blend the mix of newcomers and returnees, but they could sneak into the NCAA Tournament. The biggest difficult will be replacing the backcourt production of departed seniors Louis Bullock (20.7 ppg) and Robbie Reid (13.5 ppg).
