Michigan State
1998-99 record
34-5, 15-1 Big Ten, lost to Duke in NCAA national semifinals
Coach
Tom Izzo, 88-41 (4 years at Michigan State), 88-41 overall
Projected starting lineup
F Morris Peterson, 6-6, Sr.
Super sixth man will move into the starting lineup.

F A.J. Granger, 6-9, Sr.
Experienced reserve averaged more than 20 minutes per game last season and averaged 10.6 ppg in NCAA tournament games.

C Andre Hutson, 6-8, Jr.
Superb offensive rebounder who made 61.7 percent of his shots last season.

G Charlie Bell, 6-3, Jr.
Started all but five games last season.

G Mateen Cleaves, 6-2, Sr.
Two-time Big Ten Player of the Year expected to miss eight to 10 weeks; David Thomas, Jr., 6-7, slated to start in his place.

Top guy off the bench
F Mike Chappell, 6-9, Jr.,
Duke transfer is an excellent shooter, hitting 43.4 percent of his 3-point shots in his final season with the Blue Devils. Could easily crack starting lineup.
Key Newcomers
G/F Jason Richardson, 6-6, Fr.,
One of the premier prep players in Michigan last season, was expected to play a lot but was ruled a partial qualifer by the NCAA. The Spartans are appealing that decision.
F Al Anagonye, 6-8, Fr.
Will provide inside help.
Key Games
Dec. 1 at North Carolina
Dec. 7 vs. Kansas
Dec. 11 at Arizona
Dec. 23 at Kentucky
Feb. 5 vs.UConn
Outlook
Besides missing Cleaves in the first part of the season, the Spartans will have to get accustomed to playing without departed senior center Antonio Smith, a fierce rebounder on both ends. But there's plenty of talent on the roster. How quickly the newcomers mix will be the question. The Spartans might struggle early, but will still be a threat to return to the Final Four.
