South Carolina
1998-99 record
8-21, 3-13 SEC
Coach
Eddie Fogler, 93-85 (6 years at South Carolina); 235-165 overall
Projected starting lineup
G Aaron Lucas, 5-11, So.
Started 18 games last year, must improve shooting percentages (28 percent from the floor, 23 percent from the 3-point line).

G Herbert Lee Davis, 6-5, Sr.
The Gamecocks' only senior is also their leading returning scorer at 6.3 points per game.

C Tony Kitchings, 6-10, Fr.
Played five games before spraining ankle and receiving medical redshirt last year, Fogler says he's the best big man they've had at South Carolina.

F Antonio Grant, 6-5, Jr.
Could be the key to the Gamecocks' season, a good defender who is team's second leading returning scorer at 5.2 points per game.

F Damien Kinloch, 6-7, So.
In only his fifth season of organized basketball, Kinloch is being graded more on potential now than anything; potential is high but could be a while coming.

Top guy off the bench
F David Ross, 6-5, Jr.
More valuable for his leadership than anything he can do with the basketball, Ross needs to be a stabilizing force for this team.
Key Newcomer
G Chuck Eidson, 6-7, Summerville, S.C.
The son of a coach is listed as a forward, but Foger said he likes him at the point.
Key Games
at Clemson (Dec. 16). Gamecocks haven't beaten Clemson since 1993-94.
at Georgia (Jan. 22). Could be first chance for conference win.
at Vanderbilt (March 4). If things go well, this could have NIT implications.
Outlook
How much do South Carolina's loyal fans have to put up with? Their football team is steaming toward an 0-11 season and the prospects for the hoops team don't look a lot better. The Gamecocks won 66 games in the three seasons prior to last year, but that seems like a long time ago now. "The bad news for us is we had a bad year last year," Fogler said. "The good news is we donšt think it affected our recruiting to a great degree." Kitchings' development and the play of Lucas and Davis in the backcourt are the keys. South Carolina figures to end its season at the SEC Tournament in Atlanta again this year.
