Projected starting lineup

G Michael McDonald, 6-1, Jr. Sprained ankle in first exhibition game but should be ready when it counts. G David Moseley, 6-4, Sr. One of Cardinal's best 3-point shooters, will have increased role this year. C Jarron Collins, 6-10, Jr. Voted most improved player by teammates, will occasionally team with twin brother Jason in twin-tower alignment. F Ryan Mendez, 6-7, Jr. Fully recovered now from knee surgery, gives Cardinal another outstanding outside threat. F Mark Madsen, 6-9, Sr. All-American candidate, "Mad Dog" is a fierce competitor who averaged 13.9 points and 9 rebounds last year.

Top guy off the bench

Jason Collins, 6-11, Fr. Sidelines by injuries past two seasons but ready to go this year.

Key Newcomer

Casey Jacobsen, 6-6, Glendora, Calif. Montgomery said he is most fundametally sound first-year player he has ever coached. Averaged 31.2 points at Glendora High.

Key Games

vs. Duke (Nov. 11). Matchup of national powers in Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at Madison Square Garden. vs. Mississippi State (Dec. 21). Pete Newell Change at Oakland. at Arizona (March 9). Could determine conference champion on final weekend of Pac-10 season.

Outlook

Stanford lost Peter Sauer, Kris Weems, Tim Young and Mark Seaton from last year's team and now has eight freshmen on the roster. But Montgomery says Cardinal has most talented roster in his 14 years in Palo Alto. The coach sounded upbeat about the team's potential.
