| Washington |
| 1998-99 record |
| 17-11 overall, 10-8 Pac-10 (lost to Miami [Ohio] in NCAA first round)
|
| Coach |
| Bob Bender, 85-84 (6 years at Washington); 145-141 overall |
| Projected starting lineup |
G Senque Carey, 6-4, So.
Averaged 8.7 points and made All-Pac-10 freshman team.
G Deon Luton, 6-5, Sr.
Good shooter, highest returning scorer on team at 14.3.
C David Dixon, 6-11, So.
JC transfer weighs 300 pounds and
needs to lose weight to contribute.
F Michael Johnson, 6-4, Jr.
Fluid player who, oddly enough, needs to be more selfish this year.
F Chris Walcott, 6-9, Sr.
Former walk-on converts easy
hoops and bangs underneath.
|
| Top guy off the bench |
Bryan Brown, 6-4, Jr.
Son of former NBA star Fred
Brown can hit from downtown, too.
|
| Key Newcomer |
Will Perkins, 6-8, Jr.
JC transfer needs to help out
for Huskies to return to postseason.
|
| Key Games |
vs. Gonzaga (Dec. 13). Huskies want to measure up against last year's NCAA tournament darlings.
vs. UCLA (Jan. 6). Tough Pac-10 opener against possible conference champion.
|
| Outlook |
|
Huskies figure to be a middle-of-the-Pac-10 team but coach has
high expectations even though team has lost top two players from a year ago,
Todd MacCulloch and Donald Watts. Carey and Luton are backcourt strengths,
but there are too many question marks up front. Another downer: Huskies are
playing at Sonics' home, KeyArena, this season while Hec Edmundson Pavilion
is being refurbished. Every home game will seem like a road trip. Return to
NCAA Tournament appears unlikely.
