G Blake Pengelly, 5-11, Sr. Most experienced returner with 51 career starts, a good distributor and leader. G Jan-Michael Thomas, 6-0, Sr. One of top 3-point shooters in the Pac-10; he will have to fill it up this year. C J Locklier, 6-10, Jr. Transfer from Miami of Ohio bench presses 410 pounds, but can he score? F Chris Crosby, 6-8, Sr. Averaged 13.9 points last year, can take it inside or out. F Eddie Miller, 6-7, Jr. WSU's best inside presence, led Cougars in field-goal percentage (.536).

Top guy off the bench

Mike Bush, 6-6, So. All-around player who tied for 10th in steals in Pac-10 last year (1.62).

Key Newcomer

Nick Graham, 6-0, Fr. Coach's son should get plenty of playing time with this bunch.

Key Games

vs. Gonzaga (Nov. 29 at Spokane Arena). This will be blowout No. 1. vs. Utah (Dec. 11 vs. Utah). This will be blowout No. 2.

Outlook

Pick one: Dismal or bleak. Graham is a first-year coach who will attempt to rebuild Cougars from the ground floor or, better put, the basement. Pengelly, Thomas and Crosby are capable players, but beyond that Cougs have little to offer. Graham, an assistant at Oklahoma State the past seven years, promises that the team will play hard. "When you go to war, sometimes you're a little short-handed, but you've got to fight to survive," he says. If it's survival of the fittest, Cougars will be extinct this season.
