Michael BarrettBarrett, who missed 115 games because of injuries, has elected free agency after clearing outright waivers. Barrett missed the last three months of the season after fouling a ball off his face at Colorado on July 2. He also was on the DL from April 8-May 24 with a sprained right elbow.
Tom GorzelannyGorzelanny was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make room for No. 1 draft pick Pedro Alvarez. Gorzelanny, who missed the last three weeks of the season with a finger injury, left his start against the Houston Astros in the third inning Wednesday night with an irritation in his finger. Gorzelanny went 6-9 with a 6.66 ERA in 21 starts.
Mike RedmondThe Twins will keep Redmond for another season, paying him $950,000. The 37-year-old backup catcher hit .287 in 38 games this season, with 12 RBIs. He has a .292 career average. A leader in the clubhouse, Redmond played fewer games this season. He played in 82 games in 2007, 47 in 2006 and 45 in his first year with the team in 2005. Starter Joe Mauer stayed healthy this season and logged more time behind the plate.
Ambiorix BurgosBurgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday. Prosecutor Raul Quiroz said an investigation could lead to additional charges.
Daisuke MatsuzakaMatsuzaka will be on the mound for the Red Sox when the AL championship series begins Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays. Matsuzaka was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA this season, best among the Boston starters in both categories. But he also led the rotation with 94 walks, raising his pitch count and limiting him to 167 2-3 innings.
Rich HardenThe Cubs picked up Harden's $7 million option for next year. The Cubs acquired the hard-throwing right-hander from Oakland on July 8. He was the losing pitcher in Game 3 of the NL playoffs on Saturday night as the Cubs were swept in three games by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old Harden went a combined 10-2 with a 2.07 ERA in 25 starts for the Athletics and Cubs this season. Harden, who has battled arm problems throughout his career, was 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 starts with the Cubs.
Omar VizquelVizquel, the 11-time Gold Glove shortstop who will be looking for work this winter, is recovering from laser surgery on his right eye. "All went well,'' Vizquel said in an e-mail. Vizquel got a late start to the year after needing arthroscopic left knee surgery during spring training. He was limited to 92 games - his fewest since playing 64 in 2003 for the Cleveland Indians, the second-to-last year of his 11-season tenure there. Vizquel batted .222 with 23 RBIs, 10 doubles and a triple in 2008.

Andy SonnanstineSonnanstine gave up both runs and three hits over 5 2-3 innings of a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday that clinched the Rays' first-round AL playoff series. Sonnanstine walked one and fanned four in his first career playoff start. He went 13-9 with a 4.38 ERA in 32 regular-season starts, but had gone 0-3 in seven outings since a win over the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 18.
Torii HunterHunter drove in two runs in the eighth inning to pull the the Angels into a tie, but his team couldn't hold on and fell 3-2 at Boston on Monday. The Red Sox advanced to an AL championshipe series matchup against Tampa Bay. Hunter batted .278 with 21 homers and 78 RBIs during the regular season - his first with Los Angeles after spending the last 11 years with Minnesota. He went 7-for-18 (.389) with five RBIs in the postseason.
Travis HafnerHafner may need right shoulder surgery after a disappointing end-of-the-season physical exam. Hafner spent more than three months on the disabled list with a strained shoulder. During his exit physical, team doctors found the strength did not return to levels that the club had hoped following the extended rehab, general manager Mark Shapiro said Tuesday. Hafner and the team are now examining "alternatives" including offseason arthroscopic surgery. Tests showed the left-handed power hitter had mysteriously lost nearly all the strength in his shoulder.
B.J. UptonUpton homered twice in a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday that clinched the Rays' first-round AL playoff series. Upton, who hit .273 with nine homers and 67 RBIs during the regular season, has gone 5-for-18 (.278) with a triple, three homers and four RBIs in the playoffs. He has also scored five times.
Carlos MarmolMarmol suffered minor injuries in a car accident early Tuesday in the Dominican Republic. A Cubs representative in the Dominican Republic, Jose Serra, said the Cubs reliever received seven stitches in his forehead but is otherwise healthy. A truck hit a car carrying Marmol, a cousin and a friend in his hometown of Bonao near 2 a.m. The All-Star right-hander had just arrived in the Caribbean nation after the Cubs were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs. Marmol said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that the air bag deployed and he only suffered a cut and an "inflammation" of his forehead. Marmol pitched in 82 games this season, going 2-4 with a 2.68 ERA.
Mariano RiveraRivera had surgery Tuesday on his right shoulder and is expected to resume throwing in three months, a month ahead of spring training. New York Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek performed the operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery, shaving a calcified joint on the top of Rivera's shoulder. The 38-year-old closer had 39 saves this year, and his 1.40 ERA was his best since 2005.
Jon LesterLester held the Angels to four hits in seven shutout innings in Game 4 of the ALDS on Monday, but but lost his chance at a second victory in the series when Los Angeles scored twice in the eighth to tie it 2-all. The Red Sox won 3-2 to advance to the ALCS. Lester figures to start Game 2 of the ALCS at Tampa Bay on Saturday. He's been outstanding so far in the playoffs, allowing one unearned run in 14 innings.
Mike LowellThe Red Sox have removed Lowell from their first-round postseason roster on because of a right hip strain. He would be ineligible to play in the AL championship series if the Red Sox advance past their first-round opponent, the Los Angeles Angels. The World Series MVP, who also has a torn labrum in his right hip, was replaced on the active roster by infielder Gil Velazquez, who made his major league debut on Sept. 25. Lowell was 0-for-8 in two games during the series against the Angels.
