Dantzler's day QB impressive in Clemson's Orange-White scrimmagePosted: Saturday April 10, 1999 10:34 PM
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Quarterback Woody Dantzler passed for 220 yards and two scores Saturday as the Tigers concluded their spring practice with the annual Orange-White battle. Three Clemson quarterbacks through for 474 yards in the controlled 130-play scrimmage where the White team played offense all day. The offense scored seven touchdowns, three on the ground and four through the air. Tiger defenders had two interceptions, one by Alex Ardley for 22 yards and one by Brandon Rouse for 11 yards. Braxton Williams and Harold Means each had eight tackles for the Orange defenders. "I thought the defense dominated the first half," Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. "They took charge in the first half, but they passed the baton in the second half. It seemed the offense scored on every possession in the second half." Vince Ciurciu led Tiger rushers with 38 yards on a dozen carries. He scored one touchdown. Javis Austin, who missed a week of spring practice because of dizzy spells, had 31 yards on 12 carries and a pair of scores. Dantzler's 220 yards was a spring game record. He hit 11 of 25 passes. The 1998 starter, Brandon Streeter, had nine completions on 24 attempts for 148 yards. Freshman Matt Schell was five of nine for 106 yards. Brian Wofford had four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Tony Lazzara hit three of four field goal attempts.
