College Football Scoreboards Schedules Standings Polls Stats Conferences Teams Players Recruiting` BYU spring practice wraps up with Blue and White scrimmage

The Daily Universe (Brigham Young U.)

PROVO, Utah (U-WIRE) -- The annual Blue and White spring football scrimmage was held Saturday at Cougar Stadium with the White squad crushing the Blue squad, 28-0.

The White squad used solid defense and a strong passing attack to cruise to the victory. With last year's starting quarterback Kevin Feterik not playing in the game, sophomore Charlie Peterson stole the show.

Peterson led the white team to the victory by passing for 209 yards. He completed 13 of 24 passes and threw two touchdowns in under three quarters of action.

Despite the big offensive afternoon, Peterson understands what the real reason for playing the game is.

"Of course, you always want to be on the winning side of things," Peterson said. "There were no wagers or anything. We just came in and had fun."

Also having fun for the white squad was another young quarterback, Bret Engemann. The 6-foot-4 freshman from Provo, came in after Peterson had set the tone for the white squad and kept the offensive machine rolling. He completed nine of 15 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

The scoring started in the second quarter, when sophomore running back Paul Peterson scored from three yards out to give the white team a 6-0 lead.

Three minutes later, the white squad scored again as Charlie Peterson hit junior tight end Tevita Ofahengaue for a 13-yard score. Junior Owen Pochman finished the first-half scoring by hitting a 31-yard field goal, bringing the score to 15-0.

In the second half, it was more of the white squad. This time it was Engemann's turn. With 3:41 left in the third quarter, Engemann hit junior Ben Horton with a 19-yard touchdown pass that gave the white squad a comfortable 22-0 lead.

On the last play of the game, Peterson was back in as quarterback and threw his second touchdown of the afternoon -- a 20-yard toss to Justin Ena, a linebacker who saw offensive action.

Another offensive surprise was the introduction of senior cornerback Brian Gray as a wide receiver. Gray, giving his best Deion Sanders impersonation, lined up on several plays, particularly near the goal line. The offensive emergence of Gray is something the coaches are looking at seriously for next fall.

"The plans are for me to play some offense," said Gray, who last saw offensive action as a senior in high school. "It will mainly be in the red-zone. Sometimes as a decoy, but also to run some fade routes. I'm pretty tall and can jump up and get some of those balls. It is fun though."

The game brought the conclusion of spring practices. The regular season will start when the Cougars host the University of Washington Sept. 9.
