The Greatest Low on Earth Posted: Thursday November 11, 1999 12:27 PM
There is nothing like the excitement of a heavyweight championship fight. That's what I say. The electricity coming from the matchup on Saturday night between Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis runs right through my body as I'm sure it does for you. What will happen? That is the question that always makes these fights between two large men so attractive. Will Eugenia Williams, the myopic judge from the first Holyfield-Lewis meeting, return to give us another science-fiction twist to the outcome? Or will there be some new boxing expert at ringside, some life-long aficionado of the game, who will make headlines with his or her scorecard? Maybe Martha Stewart. Or Pee Wee Herman. Will one of the fighters take a quick punch to the head after the bell and injure a knee as Mr. Orlin Norris did only a few weeks ago against Mr. Mike Tyson? Will there be a disqualification for a low blow, the old Andrew Golota plot? Will one of the fighters quit in his corner in tears like Oliver McCall? Will there be a boxing still life, the Oscar De La Hoya approach that "I'm good and I don't have to hit anybody to win?" Will somebody -- stop the presses -- take a small nibble out of somebody else's ear? Which officials or promoters will be indicted? Who will be sued? Whose purse will be held up by the Nevada State Athletic Commission? Will Jim Gray be around, making a nuisance of himself? Ah, there's nothing like a good heavyweight championship fight these days. Outside of maybe a good bass-fishing tournament. Sports Illustrated senior writer Leigh Montville appears regularly on CNN/Sports Illustrated.
